Last Week at Rotary

Last week the club was treated to a viewing of the video depicting our 100-year history, prepared for the gala last March. Kurt Baltrusch, who headed up the history project, explained how the project evolved.

For several months, Kurt and other volunteers collected the Rotary news stories that could be found at the History Museum, but as the collection mounted, they weren't sure what to do with them. Mary Moe suggested that they organize them by theme (Camp Rotary, Polio, etc.), and she created a synopsis of the articles and photos for each theme.  Lacey Gallagher suggested that we present the synopsis and the associated clips to Ad Club Director John Godwin and ask him to create one of his famous slideshows. Voila: a thumbnail sketch of our first 100 years as a club.

It was Kurt's day in more ways than one. He picked his own 50-50 ticket and generously donated the $260 pot to Polio Plus!

This Week at Rotary

This week we'll get an update on the Great Falls Symphony from Executive Director Hillary Rose. Join us at noon at the country club!

Tuesday evening, starting at 5:30, is our end-of-the-month social at the Front. Bring a friend and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow Rotarians.

Service above Self

For some time Rotarians have been working with multiple organizations to assist the local YWCA with building and facility improvements. D.A. Davidson kicked off the project by providing funding for the purchase and installation of 3 safety windows, which will give the YMCA Mercy Home the ability to use 3 additional rooms for families with small children.

Last weekend, with Tim Peterson’s leadership, Rotarians and other volunteers from Great Falls businesses built a wall partition that creates a secure, private area for Family and Children Services, an important addition to the facility. In addition, the group painted several public areas to freshen and brighten the decor.  Rotarians on the job included Dean Boyle, Bill Bronson, Mary Moe and Rob Rezek.

Rotarian Jeff Albrecht of Talcott Construction assisted in getting donated materials and volunteers from Johnson Madison Lumber, Talcott Construction, Forsyth Paint, Cascade Electric, and 4 Aces Plumbing. Great work for a great cause!

Rotarians Have Culture!

Just when you're thinking, "Hmmm, I haven't seen Bill Salina at Rotary lately," who should pop up on Facebook? Our former county commissioner and fellow Rotarian!

Apparently, Bill has a good excuse for playing hooky. He's touring Italy with a fabulous blonde. Here they are in Milan, just two Great Falls kids soaking up some culture. (Is it just me, or does it looks like Jo is about to be the victim of a pick-pocket?)

Not to be outdone, this weekend fellow Rotarians Susan Wolff and Darrell Stevens were beaming like proud parents at Carnegie Hall, where the choir of Great Falls College performed for the first time. La dolce vita!

A Special Thank You

This month Sydney Blair once again shouldered the task of interviewing high school freshmen interested in attending the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy this summer. Joining her in two evenings filled with interviews were Fred Anderson and Bill Harp.

This task isn't one that most of us see, but it deserves our notice. Thank you, Sydney, Fred and Bill, for opening the door for eight lucky kids to have a life-altering experience at RYLA!

Weekly Wisdom for Memorial Day

It is foolish and wrong to mourn those who died. Rather, we should be thankful that such men lived.

George S. Patton

Words are feeble on Memorial Day, for the sight before us is that of a strong and good nation that stands in silence and remembers those who were loved and who, in return, loved their countrymen enough to die for them.
