Waterfowls Face off in November!

Hundreds of yellow rubber ducks  will race down the Holiday Inn Express water slide at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 8 while hundreds of community members gather to cheer their fowls on. This new club project, initiated by President Todd Neighbor and headed up by board member Heidi Hockett, is a fund-raiser for Interact Rotary service projects. Each duck (ticket) can be purchased for $10. The fastest duck will earn its “owner” a cash prize of $1000; the second place winner will win $250. The remaining funds will go to Interact Rotary service projects and scholarships.

Glenn Lambert will provide color commentary on race night. Channing Hartelius will “interview” duck trainers to get an insight as to the art and strategy of training ducks for race day! After the duck winners are announced, NorthWestern Energy will host a celebration at Holiday Inn Express.

Don’t miss this entertaining evening! Invite your friends, neighbors and race fans! Many other prizes and games will be available at the social, but the real winners are the kids and adults who benefit from Rotary service projects supported by the Derby!   Tickets may be purchased from Heidi Hockett at Heidi.hockett2012@gmail.com, 868-3599, or during Harvest Howl.

Coming Right Up ...

It's crunch time for Harvest Howl, so remember ...

  • Susan Wolff is encouraging us to get creative about the silent auction items. Perhaps you have a service or gift that could be part of a larger, attractive package, like a weekend at the pet spa to accompany Bobcat-Grizzly game tickets.
  • We're collecting bottles of wine/liquor at each week's meeting, so bring a bottle with you next week!
The autumn highway clean-up will be next Tuesday, Oct. 2. Volunteers will meet at 5:30 at KRTV and will gather at the Montana Club for refreshments after their work is done. Please let Carey Gray know (catgraphics@3rivers.net) if you can join the crew, or just reply to this newsletter and we'll let her know.

Last Week at Rotary

Last week we were honored to have District 5390 Governor Rick Moore with us as he tours the clubs throughout the district. In 2008 Rick moved to Montana from Wyoming when his wife, Sylvia, took a job as Deputy Commissioner of the Montana University System. Rick has worked as a consultant out of the home for over 30 years, so the move itself was not disruptive, but he found himself wishing for some way to meet people and to engage in service. The Helena Rotary Club fulfilled that desire.

Before long, Rick was president of the Helena club and became involved in District 5390 activities as a club president. He was impressed with the good work the district was doing and wanted to be a part of it, ultimately working himself through the ranks to the governorship.

Rick said the biggest issue for District 5390 and in fact Rotary worldwide is declining membership. He encouraged us to get our message out, innovate with meeting times and formats, and actively recruit people to become Rotarians.

Rick also bestowed a number of awards on his visit. Our club is one of five in the district to have received a Presidential citation for our good work. He gave Community Service Awards to Bill Harp and Gregg Holt (pictured) for their work with the Boy Scouts. (Aaron Weissman also received the award, but was not able to attend the meeting.) Rick also recognized Susan Wolff for receiving her first Paul Harris Fellowship, Todd Neighbor for achieving his Paul Harris +1, and Dean Boyle for achieving Paul Harris +2 status.

In One Word: Dictionaries!

We need to get the dictionaries out in the next by October 18! Last week we explained the process for delivering the dictionaries. For those who were unable to attend, here’s what you need to do:

Call the school where you’ll be delivering the dictionaries to get a final count and to set an appointment for delivery. Please do that before next Tuesday!

Notify Mary Moe of when your appointment is.

On the week when you will be delivering dictionaries, collect them at Rotary or contact Mary (406-868-9427) to make other arrangements. You will get enough dictionaries for your students and their teachers, along with the stickers/nameplates that go inside the front cover.

When you deliver the dictionaries: (a) tell them a little about Rotary (b) distribute the dictionaries, (c) have the kids paste the stickers in their dictionaries and be sure to put their names on the sticker, (d) tell them a little bit about the 4-way test, (e) have a little fun looking up words, (f) show them some other things you can learn in other sections of the dictionary, and (g) with the teacher’s permission, get a photo of you and the kids with their dictionaries.

Bring any extra dictionaries back to Rotary. We may need them for future deliveries.

Thanks in advance for your work on this project. Our goal is to get a dictionary in the hands of every third-grader in the Golden Triangle!

Milestones

We see in October with the birthdays of two Rotarian leaders. Happy birthday on Tuesday to our Sergeant-at-Arms, Channing Hartelius, and on Thursday to our President, Todd Neighbor. Best wishes and sincere thanks to both of you for all the good you do for -- and through -- our club.

Today's winning "bulletin bucks" winner is button number #101. See Todd Neighbor to claim your $25 cash card!

This Week at Rotary

Every 10 years since 1948, Montanans have been asked to continue the 6-mill levy, providing base-level funding for its university system. This year is the year to seek voter approval once more. Fellow Rotarian Mary Moe will make the presentation on the 6-mill levy and how it benefits students, taxpayers, and communities throughout Montana.

As if that weren't excitement enough, the 50-50 pot now exceeds $400, with only 22 cards left in the deck! Join us at noon at the country club!
