Welcome Two New Rotarians

Last week Kevin Burnett and Sandi Filipowicz gave their 3-minute talks and received their blue badges.

A Great Falls native, Kevin is a financial advisor with Northwest Investment Advisors. He became interested in the financial field when he was helping his grandfather read the stock ticker on the TV screen one day. He’s also a dog lover, and with his girl friend, Kristy, is now the proud owner of a Golden Retriever puppy named Peaches.

Sandy Filipowicz hardly needs an introduction since she was a presenter at a recent noon meeting. In fact, we recruited her to join the club at that meeting! She and her husband Tom are well-known faces in Cascade County, and Sandy is now the energetic executive director of the YWCA.

Welcome to Rotary, Sandy and Kevin! We are honored to have you in our club.

Next Week at Rotary

Next week at noon Lori Eckhart will tell us about the Great Falls Nonprofit Alliance. Join us Tuesday at noon at the country club!

Beth Frasure will be the presenter for the evening Rotary meeting on Thursday at 6 p.m., also at the country club. Her topic is emergency planning. With last week's refinery incident, the topic is definitely timely! All members and their guests are welcome.

Last Week at Rotary

Last week our speaker was Lorraine Verploegen, who started the proactive nonprofit, Plant a Seed Read program, in Havre.

Plant a Seed Read supports early literacy development for children from birth to age 5.  They raise funds to ensure all children from birth to age 5 have the opportunity to receive books through the Dollywood Foundation's Imagination Library.

The goals of the program align with the goals of a gardener:

To plant - provide age appropriate books to all children from birth to age 5 in Northcentral Montana.

To nurture - teach families to read aloud to their children each day to promote bonding, brain development, literacy skills and a love of reading.

To grow - help children learn how to listen and speak, improve children's experiences and interactions in early years, and help children make language discoveries as they play, explore, and interact with others.

To excel – raise children’s reading and comprehension levels by the time they enter school because school readiness and lifelong learning drive success in school and life.

It's an exciting program that will lead to the blossoming of potential in children throughout the Golden Triangle!

Mark Your Calendars

You have only 12 more days to complete the membership satisfaction survey. Please take a few minutes of your time to participate in the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5ZVZQXB.

Plan for a Polio Plus Fundraiser at Enbar at the end of this month. More specific details next week!

All Rotarians are invited to the District Conference in Helena on May 3-4. It would be great to have a good showing.

All Rotarians are invited to the Zone Conference in Denver September 5-8. It's quite a rewarding experience, so give it some consideration.

Milestones

Birthday greetings go out this week to Mark Nash on March 11, Hizzoner Bob Holter on March 13, and Kevin Burnett on March 14. Best wishes from all of us to all three of you!

Weekly Wit: Waiting for a Chinook

With a Smile on My Face
(To the tune of “With a Song in My Heart”)

With a smile on my face,
I await your arrival, sweet Spring!
Though I’m frozen in space,
Time moves on, toward the warmth you will bring.
Yes, my ribs jut out
On week two without Ruffles,
But you’ll see no kerfuffles here. No …

Every day that goes by,
The thermometer rises a tick.
Soon the birds will drop by,
Soon my tongue to the mailbox won’t stick.
Though I feel forsook,
Happy’s how I’ll look,
Waiting for a chinook – and you.
