We were treated last week to the oratorical skills of two fabulous local 4-H members, Jessica Banks (left in photo) and Kaitlyn Koterba (right). Both are making names for themselves as speakers at the state and national levels.
Jessica spoke on the issue of high school dropouts and Kaitlyn offered solutions to the problem of hunger in America. To say that these girls represent 4-H and CMR High School well is an understatement. They exude intelligence, polish, and graciousness!
Last week we also started a new 50-50 deck, since the pot had been emptied the week before by a guest who found that pesky Queen of Diamonds. We're now searching for the 4 of Spades. Bill Salinas was the first to go down swinging on the new deck. Better luck next time, Bill!
This Week in Rotary
Bring your books tomorrow to Rotary when District Governor Bill Spath makes the annual gubernatorial visit to Rotary Club of Great Falls. Bill's specific focus as governor is literacy outreach, so we are greeting him with evidence of our intent to win his challenge -- to donate the most books for readers of all ages, particularly books for young readers. Rotarian Kathy Mora will make sure they're distributed to the "park libraries" around town. Our goal is to break the 220-book record set by another club.
After the luncheon, President Peterson is organizing a trip to Camp Rotary so that Governor Spath can see our pet project. Tentative plans are to have a light meal out there. Please consider joining us as we show our new leader Great Falls hospitality!
Also this week is the monthly Rotary social. It will be Wednesday, Aug. 26, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Celtic Cowboy. Last month's social drew 19 Rotarians. Let's top that number on Wednesday!
Harvest Howl Update
The pace is picking up on planning for Harvest Howl 2015.Tom Nelson has secured the popular 38 Special as the main attraction, and Bus Driver Tour, a perennial favorite at Red Ants Pants, will be the Montana band. Both bands should draw big!
Susan Wolff announced that the silent auction for such a big crowd will do best with some really nice options - e.g., weekend stays at Big Sky, floating trips, etc. Put on your thinking caps for some good silent auction items. Mike Wier notified Rotarians that tables are on sale to Rotarians alone during August. Sign up for yours asap! Carey Gray is coordinating volunteers and folks began signing up for shifts and auctions last week at Rotary.
Rotarians Bring Communities Together
Last week's quarterly luncheon of the Great Falls Chamber of Commerce provided yet another example of how central Rotarians are to the life of this community. Rotarians were much in evidence in the luncheon crowd, as one would expect, but they were also front and center for the occasion.
Bob Oakland's daughter Leslie accepted the Chamber's "Business of the Quarter" Award to City Motors, the family business. The litany of all the ways City Motors makes this community better is truly amazing. An award well-deserved.
Putting the event together, acting as host and greeter, and emcee-ing this all-star event was our very own Steve Malicott. He's well-suited to such work. Unflappable, friendly, and very funny, he may run a big event like this one, but he does it in a way that always has him in the background. And he treats everyone, from the help staff to the Governor, with the exact same deference and respect. Graciousness looks good on you, Steve. Glad you're one of us!
Milestones
Happy birthday today (Monday) to Jim Senst and tomorrow (Tuesday) to Jim Keogh. Both men enrich our camaraderie and contribute to the work of our club. Best wishes to you both!
