This Week in Rotary

Let's re-envision downtown Great Falls. This week Tim Peterson, Megan Ballock, and Cara Carlson will help us do just that! Join us at noon at the country club or on Zoom!

Last Week at Rotary

Our featured speaker thought it best not to risk the COVID-10 exposure last week, so Rotarians spent a pleasant hour over lunch brainstorming ideas for projects that could engage the club in a year when Harvest Howl has been canceled. Several ideas were suggested:

Art Taft has become quite concerned about the amount of plastic being discarded outdoors, particularly in and near the river, and suggested we take on a plastic clean-up project.

Heidi Hockett thought that doing a Red Cross donation drive would be worthwhile and reminded Rotarians that food delivery in the schools may be needed.

The chat function on Zoom also included a couple of suggestions. One was to use the time to  work on the club’s history. Although many members of the club have been members since the mid-1980s and even earlier, once the Great Falls Tribune stopped printing stories from our weekly meetings, the print history of the club at the History Museum gets pretty sparse. Now would be a good time to start collecting oral histories from members.

Welcome Our New Red-Badge Rotarian!

We are proud to introduce our newest red badge-wearer, Jesse Mahugh. Jesse is a Kalispell native who graduated from Flathead Valley Community College in 2004, where he had served as Student Government President. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Montana.

Jesse was recently named the new Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters in the Helena, Boulder, and Great Falls region. He held the equivalent position in Flathead County for five years, during which he doubled the  organization’s budget and staffing, expanding its programs.

In recognition of his service and achievement, he was given FVCC’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2016. With his record of leadership and his passion for service, Jesse will make an outstanding Rotarian. Welcome to the club, Jesse!

Milestones

Shim Abbasi celebrates a birthday on Monday and Malissa Hollan celebrates her on Tuesday. If they wait a few years, they can  celebrate their birthdays the way Owen Robinson did last week.

Owen told the club last Tuesday that 52 years ago he had been a Teaching Assistant at the University of Montana, working on his master's degree, when Vietnam came calling. But on his 76th birthday last Tuesday, he announced that he was recently re-admitted into the UM's graduate school and he will finally complete that degree. Good for you, Owen!
