It is with heavy heart that we relay the message that past president Dale Gorman has left us. He succumbed to a mercifully brief bout with cancer last Tuesday.
It is hard to overstate the impact that Dale's life has had on this community and so many people in it. He was instrumental in the creation of the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center here, as well as the Diamond of Honor at Centene Stadium. He was a deacon and an elder for his church, a volunteer for good works too numerous to mention, and above all, a kind and humble human being whose dignity and good will commanded respect.
Because of his leadership position in the Forest Service and in Rotary, Dale was instrumental in preserving our important relationship with that agency relative to Camp Rotary.
Dale's funeral will be Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Great Falls. "Here cracks a noble heart. The rest is silence. May flights of angels speed thee to thy rest."
This Week in Rotary
This week ourfeatured presenter will be Dusti Zimmer, who will tell us about Youth Crisis Diversion and House Project. Join us at noon at the country club!
Last Week at Rotary
Last week our featured speaker was Dr. Jonathon Bingham. In addition to being a dermotologist with the Great Falls Clinic, he is a flight surgeon with Montana Air National Guard.
Dr. Bingham has always had an interest in aeromedical evacuation and his presentation focused on the early days in this field. Igor Sigorsky, pictured here, was the pioneer of the helicopter that made medical evacuation possible. It was 1939 when Sigorsky flew the first practical helicopter in Connecticut, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The 50-50 card-drawing was again unsuccessful, much to the delight of all but one Rotarian present.
It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like ....
Yes, like Christmas. Keep these dates in mind:
Next Saturday, Dec. 12, we will be ringing bells for the Salvation Army. Contact Virginia Stacey for details.
On Tuesday, Dec. 15, we'll have our Holiday Luncheon upstairs at the country club. The East Middle School Band will provide the entertainment. Please come to this week's meeting with the number of guests you plan to bring.
Keep our Dec. 22 meeting on your calendar too because we're going to have some holiday carols customized for Great Falls Rotary!
Milestones
Today marks the birthday of one of our newest and one of our most veteran Rotarians. Happy birthday, David Cameron and Ian Davidson! May your next year of life be the best yet!
Weekly Wisdom: Day of Infamy
Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan….
Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya. Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong. Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam. Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands. Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island. And this morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island….
Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves…. As Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory….
Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger. With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph -- so help us God.
