District 5390 Polio Plus Campaigns
Rotary always steps up to address the world’s toughest challenges. The eradication of polio is one of its longest standing and most significant efforts. Along with its partners, Rotary helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. We have reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide and we won't stop until we end the disease for good. Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
While Rotarians in District 5390 have always, generously, supported Rotary's End Polio Now efforts, this year many clubs in our District participated in fund raising and educational activities in support of World Polio Day, October 25th. The ones we know about include the Missoula Centennial Rotary Club using a matching challenge to raised $5,000.00 from club members, which when coupled with the Gates Foundation and Rotary World Fund matches parlayed into $17,500.00 to help with Rotary’s immunization efforts. The Rotary Club of Butte secured a vintage 1950s Iron Lung which they displayed in the lobby of the Northwestern Energy Headquarters in Butte to add emphasis to their month-long campaign to educate the community on Rotary’s effort to cure Polio. The Rotary Club of Kalispelland District 5390 sponsored our own DGE Lucy Smith in her participation in The Michael J Harris Memorial Ride to End Polio by helping her raise $12,000.00 (including a $10,000.00 donation made by you District 5390 from its 2021 DDF funds). At the end of her 102-mile ride DGE Lucy commented "I was proud to represent Montana Rotary District 5390 and my home Rotary Club of Kalispell, and grateful for their generous pledges of $12,000 for Polio Plus. Being able to cycle the longest 102-mile course is a privilege of good health. It is also a powerful reminder of why we Ride to End Polio."
Montana Rotary generosity doesn't stop there; District5390 also donated an additional $10,000.00 from its 2021 DDF funds as a direct contribution to Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign. All told, just these District 5390 contributions produced at least $121,500.00 in direct impact (including the World Fund and Gates Foundation matches) on Rotary’s Polio immunization efforts in Rotary year 2024-25.
District Leadership and The Prinzing family are grateful to all those who honored Carl by contributing to the District 5390 Foundation, Carl Prinzing RYLA and Peace Park Fund. So far, the effort raised $5,591.00. District leadership decided to contribute half of the fund ($2795.50) as seed money to construct a Peace Pole honoring Carl at suitable public location in Missoula. The Three Missoula clubs and Missoula Rotaract have committed to complete the project and raise the additional funds needed to make it a reality.
As to the RYLA portion, developing young leaders was near and dear to Carl’s heart, Rotary District 5390 will develop a scholarship process to enable more Montana high school students to attend Ryla. Once the process is in place, it will enable Montana Rotary Clubs to apply for scholarships to send additional young people to RYLA. These Scholarships will be available as long as funds remain available.
Your gift to the Rotary Annual Fund helps our Montana Rotary Clubs and Rotaract clubs take create positive change in communities close to home and around the world. Your contributions help Rotary strengthen peace efforts, fight disease, provide clean water and sanitation, save mothers and children, support education, grow local economies, and protect the environment.
Thanks to an outstanding recruiting effort by our District 5390 Paul Harris Society Administrator, Bozeman Rotarian, Roger Barnes, the number of District 5390 Rotarians becoming members of the Paul Harris Society grew during the past two years from about 25 to over 66. Becoming a member is simple, contact Roger and he will walk you through the online application process, and making the pledge to contribute $1,000.00 to the Rotary Endowment, the Rotary Annual Share or World Fund during the 2024-25 Rotary year. But wait, it gets better, thanks to a fund created by an anonymous Montana Rotarian, your donation will be matched dollar for dollar. It gets even better; our Rotary Zone Leadership created a $500,000.00 challenge grant that will also match your donation dollar for dollar again. Think about it, join the Paul Harris Society before July 1, 2025, and your $1,000.00 donation becomes worth $3,000.00.
