This Week at Rotary

This week local historian Suzanne Waring will tell us about the pioneers who established the City of Great Falls. Her book on the subject, Montana Pioneers Creating a Community, is fascinating! Join us Tuesday at noon at the country club or on Zoom!

Last Week at Rotary

Last week we got an update on Benefis's new Women and Children's Center from Marilyn Parker, Director of the Benefis Foundation, and Stacy Allen, Director of Women and Children Operations.

The vision behind the Women and Children's Center is to bring all medical services for children and women into one location so that patients aren't driving all over town for care and providers have the opportunity to work as teams, providing better patient outcomes.  The project was launched with a Mayfaire fundraiser in May 2019 and will be completed with a ribbon-cutting and celebration in December 2021.

The center will have three floors. The first floor is dedicated to an education center, labs for women's health and a central space for physical, occupational and speech therapy for children. With a playground right outside, the therapy will develop physical, cognitive, and social skills all in one setting.

The second floor is dedicated to pediatrics, including behavioral health services for children, an increasing need in Great Falls and throughout the nation. A pediatric endocrinologist will help develop treatment plans for children and teens coping with obesity, also a crucial need.

The third floor will offer comprehensive women's health services, from OB/GYN and fertility care to wellness, childbirth education and postpartum lactation support ... and much more.

Benefis is a not-for-profit organizations, so facilities like the Women and Children's Center are possible only because of the generosity of donors.  Through the Young Professionals Donor Match Program, created by a generous donation, any gifts from donors age 21-40 will be matched, up to $100,000. Consider giving to this worthy cause.

This Week's Upates

John Juras reports that Camp Rotary has been selected as the sight for two 5-day "Warrior Reunions," bringing together veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The groups are interested in doing some public service projects while they're there and have settled on (1) tearing down the old shed with the out-of-service water tank above the camp, as well as (2) hauling a stockpile of bridge beams to Rafferty Creek, where the second Boy Scout bridge will be built. Nice to see the camp put to such good use in yet another tough year!

Jesse Mahugh has been asked to chair our Membership Committee with the goal of getting membership to 105 by the 105th anniversary of Rotary Club of Great Falls.  His challenge to the club: "I'm in if you're in!" We're all in this together.

Planning for Harvest Howl is moving right along. Tickets will be available soon for past table-buyers. Our sister club, Electric Rotary Club, has agreed to staff and manage the silent auction. Roughly 1/3 of the profits from Harvest Howl come from the silent auction, so be thinking of what you can provide: wine, football tickets, sky-miles, etc.

Mark Your Calendars!

Social Committee Chair Heidi Hockett has planned our next Rotary Social at Brush Crazy on Thursday, Aug. 26, at 5 p.m. The cost is $15 and you should bring the beverage of your choice. Reservations are required for the 15 spots available, so please email Heidi at Heidi.Hockett@northwestern.com to reserve your spot.

Rotarians have been asked to staff the beer tent at Great Falls first-ever Big River Ruckus September 10-12. This task is definitely within our skill set! Contact Mike Wier if you can help.

You should have received an email last week from Chelle Fried outlining the plans for the upcoming Rotary Camp at Camp Rotary. The event will begin with lunch at noon on Saturday, Sept. 18, and include dinner that night, s'mores later on, a sleepover in the cabins, and breakfast on Sunday, all at no expense to you. Please let Chelle know by Sept. 7 at 217-6833 whether you plan to attend.

Milestones

Just one Rotarian birthday this week, but it's extra special: Happy birthday on Wednesday to Art Taft, Rotarian Extraordinaire!
