This Week at Rotary

This week Mike Wier, Tom Nelson and the rest of the Harvest Howl leadership will provide a review of Harvest Howl 2016. Scott Reasoner was unsuccessful in tapping into the new 50-50 pot last week, so a bigger pot and a slightly slimmer deck greets next week's lucky raffle winner. Join us at noon at the country club!

Last Week at Rotary

This week our featured speaker was Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau, who is now running for Montana’s lone seat in Congress. As a student who began her education in Head Start and ended it at Harvard, Denise has experienced first-hand the way effective government programs can level the playing field for disadvantaged and minority populations.

As state superintendent, her signature initiative has been Graduation Matters, which has significantly raised high school graduation rates throughout Montana. She cites the way she brought over 400 businesses into discussions with community leaders and educators in 58 Montana communities as an example of her approach to governing: “bringing people together to create solutions that work.”

Her opponents in the race are current Congressman Ryan Zinke (R) and Libertarian candidate Rick Breckenridge.

Rotarians Are ... Ubiquitous!

You couldn't swing a cat without hitting a Rotarian at last week's inauguration of the new president of the University of Great Falls. For starters, the new president is one of our newest Rotarians, Tony Aretz.

Tom Jacobson was one of the featured speakers at the event. Afterwards, among the many Rotarian attendees congratulating President Aretz (center) were (left to right) Gaines and Beth McFadden, Bill Bronson, and Cari Yturri.

Tony continues a long tradition of Rotarian membership among UGF presidents. Because the university is such a central institution in our community, we couldn't be happier to see that tradition continue. Congratulations, Tony, and best wishes for a long and gratifying tenure.

Don't Forget!

Milestones

Last week's bulletin was so newsy that we couldn't include the usual "Milestones," but several Rotarians celebrated birthdays:
  • Channing Hartelius - October 2
  • Amy Beames and Michael Duchemin - October 3
  • Todd Neighbor - October 4
  • Jim Humphrey - October 6
This week long-time Rotarian and past president Rick Evans celebrates his birthday on Thursday.

Looking at all the varieties of leaders above, we can only conclude that October has been very kind to Rotary Club of Great Falls! Best wishes to you all.

Weekly Reflection

Just think: Last week we changed the face of Great Falls for the next half-century (at least)!
