This Week at Rotary

It's been a while since we've had an update on Malmstrom Air Force Base, an important part of our local economy and of the service ethic in our community. This week we'll get that update from Colonel Frederickson.

Also, our 50-50 deck is slimming down nicely. Art Taft lost his chance at the pot last week, so your chances are even better this week. Join us at noon at the country club to be informed, inspired, and entertained!

Don't Forget!

Rotary's proudest achievement is the near-eradication of polio, and our #1 goal is to remove the "near" from that achievement. We are so close! As part of its End Polio Now campaign, Rotary International has designated Oct. 24 as World Polio Day. Here in Great Falls Our Great Falls, our tradition is to designate the entire month of October as "Change for Polio" Month. At each week's meeting, we bring loose change - no amount too small or too big -- to throw into the pot for the effort to eradicate polio. Please bring your extra change to Rotary this month to change polio for good.

Also, Denise Gray is wrapping up the dictionary project and needs your help. If you've distributed your dictionaries, please confirm the number you distributed and bring any extra dictionaries and labels back so that they can be used elsewhere. Also, we're still in need of a volunteer to deliver dictionaries to Heart Butte. Let Denise know if you can do it.

Get Ready to Howl!

Our signature event, the Harvest Howl, is less than a month away. We've got big-draw bands (including 38 Special, pictured) and a budget to match, so we need to bring in the crowds and sell, sell, sell! Here's how you can help:

  • Dessert Auction. If desserts aren't in your skill set, patronize one of our many local providers and purchase something there. Let Nicole Michelotti know that you're contributing a dessert and give her enough detail to promote the item. The day of the event, just bring the dessert to the Expo Park ... or call Nicole and she'll pick it up.
  • Wine for Baskets. Every single one of us should contribute a bottle of wine; and if you have an interesting container/basket/tray for a wine basket, so much the better! Wine baskets are popular silent auction items.
  • Silent Auction. We're still looking for attractive contributions to our silent auction. Contact Susan Wolff with your ideas.
  • Beverage Servers. Rather than hire servers for the premiere tables this year, we're looking for Rotarian volunteers. You will need to complete the TIPS Certification process, which involves a 2-hour class on Thurs., Oct 22, at 6 p.m. at 1108 Central Avenue, next to the Bridal Shoppe. Contact Nicole Michelotti to confirm your interest.

Rotarians Are International!

Rotary is an international club, and our local chapter is full of people with an interest in seeing the rest of the world. Currently, past president John Koppelman is visiting Europe and taking in all the sights and sounds ... and suds.

John spent considerable time in Ireland last week, where the pubs appear to have been plentiful. Right now he's in Amsterdam, from whence he sent this photograph of the Rijks Museum, which features, among other artists, Rembrandt and Van Gogh!

Enjoy yourself, John, and come back home ready to work! Harvest Howl needs you!

Milestones

October has historically been a very good month for Rotary Club of Great Falls. In October, the following long-time Rotarians pledged to put service above self!
  • Beth McFadden - 21 years a Rotarian
  • Dale Gorman - 35 years a Rotarian
  • Bob Jorgensen - 48 years a Rotarian
Over a century of service in just three people! Food for thought.

Rotary Wisdom

As we enter into the countdown months for our celebration of 100 years of Great Falls Rotary, we'll feature memorable quotes from Rotarians gone by:

"Rotarians are very much more favorably disposed toward action than they are toward words."
Paul Harris, 1912

(What a difference a century makes! Today, we would say, "Just do it!")
