Last Week at Rotary

We were treated to an excellent talk on giving communities last week by Scheels Store Leader Peter Phillipi. Peter drew parallels between the stories of Scheels, United Way, and Rotary as a way of encouraging a vision for a future that involves all three in the pursuit of common goals.

Scheels was founded in Sabin, MN, in 1902, originally as a hardware store. United Way of Cascade County traces its origins to the 1920s when local businesspeople saw the advantage of combining charitable giving through a single organization - at that time, the "Community Chest." Rotary, of course, got its start when local businessmen saw the desirability of men from all walks of life working together to make the community and the world a better place.

All three organizations have evolved over the course of their histories. Scheels spread from Minnesota to the Dakotas and into Montana, primarily as a hardware store, but in the 1970s, Scheels bucked the odds and decided to focus on sporting goods. The operation has been highly successful. United Way evolved from the Community Chest to the Community Fund and from the United Fund to United Way. More importantly, it evolved from being a single point for collection and distribution of charitable donations, to an assessment-based, results-driven organization driving positive change in Cascade County. And as we all know, Rotary Club of Great Falls evolved in both its membership and its focuses over the course of the last century.

Through all those changes, each organization has focused on making the community a better place by reaching out to contribute to the health and well-being of youth, as well as families and individuals in need. Peter makes a good case for the strength that all three organizations could bring to the common goals we share. As the director of United Way of Cascade County's next fundraising campaign, he'll bring new energy and vision to this vital part of community giving!

This and That

In a change from the usual schedule, your Rotary board will meet this Tuesday, not next Tuesday. Same time (5:30), same place (MLCC board room).

Susan Wolff announced at last week's noon meeting that she has the volunteers she needs to staff the annual fundraising concert of the Phillipsburg Rotary Club on August 17. Thank you, fellow Rotarians, for stepping up to help out.

The International Peace Park Assembly will be September 13-15 in Waterton. It's a lovely time to be in a lovely place and learn more about making this a more harmonious world. Registrations are now open.

Have you reserved your Harvest Howl table yet? With Smashmouth as the headliner, tables will sell out for sure!

Making Her Debut ...

Rebecca Bogden-Richards has graciously taken on the role of chairing our Social Committee, and the first event of her tenure was a memorable one.

Not only did we see (bottom row, from right) Tanya and David Cameron, Shannon Hoiland (and top row from right) John Juras, Dean Boyle, Cari Yturri, Troy Hallsell, Heidi Hockett, and Shandy Petersen, but we also had three special guests.

Rob Rezek and Saniel Clarey Rezek were on hand to present their daughter, Aris Rose. Born on June 15 just one ounce shy of 7 pounds, Aris is predictably beautiful. It's always nice to see new parents reveling in the new world 7 pounds of love can create.

Next month's social will be a lawn party at the country club! Mark your calendars now for August 28! And thank you, Rebecca, for taking on this organizational task.

Milestones

Happy birthday this week to Rob Rezek on August 8 and Derik Sapp on August 9. Best wishes to you both for a happy celebration and a wonderful new year.

Weekly Warmth

Irish Baby Blessing
For Aris Rose Rezek
(Born 6-15-2019)

We wish for the new child
A heart that can be beguiled by a flower
That the wind lifts as it passes
Over the grasses after a summer shower ...
A heart that can recognize
Without the aid of eyes the gifts that life holds for the wise.

When the storms break for her,
May the trees shake for her their blossoms down
In the night that she is troubled,
May a friend wake for her, so that her time be doubled.
And at the end of all loving and love,
May the Good Lord above give her a crown.
