Last Week at Rotary

Superintendent Tom Moore joined a full complement of Rotarians last week to tell us about the challenging year now ending for the Great Falls Public Schools and the challenges that lie ahead.  Tom has lived in Great Falls for the past 14 years, having moved here as Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Schools in 2007 and winning the top job in 2019. He readily admits that the COVID-19 crisis of the past year has been the most challenging he has ever faced in 39 years in education and perhaps the most challenging the district has ever faced.

Nonetheless, Tom’s remarks were filled with gratitude. He pointed out that, in spite of the pandemic, Great Falls voters supported the mill levy request. Excellent community members have stepped up to serve on the school board, including Rotarians Mark Finnicum and Bill Bronson. The legislature, thanks in part to the leadership of Rotarian Fred Anderson, also enacted legislation that provides schools with funding for educating handicapped students past the age of 18. Great Falls has been doing that for years because it's the right thing to do, but it comes with a cost and the funding is much-needed.

The community supported Tom and the board when they decided to open the schools last fall. “Kids would have been hurt if we hadn’t,” Tom noted. In fact, test results show that when the schools shut in the spring to curb the spread of COVID-19, documented losses in learning occurred. Even with the schools open and available virtually and in person this year, there is a need for what Tom calls “the 3 R’s” – remediation, re-engagement, and re-integration.

Remediation will be needed to close the learning gaps, but there is also a need to re-engage students in learning after more than a year of off-again/on-again virtual and in-person learning and disrupted classroom experiences. There is also a need to re-integrate students into the full educational experience. Some 200 students are simply unaccounted for – they aren’t enrolled in GFPS but also don’t show up on home school or private school roles.

After outlining the planned use of CARES and ARPA funds (called ESSER funding), Superintendent Moore praised the administration, staff, and faculty that have made a challenging year so gratifying. Taking a line from Theodore Roosevelt, he said his philosophy is to “pick good [people] to do what needs to be done and do not meddle with them while they do it.”

Coming Up

Rotary Electric is sponsoring a wellness event on Saturday, May 15 - a hike in the Sluice Boxes. It's a wonderful experience and it will be nice to mingle with fellow Rotarians. If you are interested, plan to deploy from the East Walmart Parking Lot at 9 a.m.

Heidi Hockett took the floor at last week's meeting to announce that community service and engagement activities are coming back to Rotary! We hope to have a night at the ballpark soon and will once again take on the duck race, highway clean-up, trash pick-up and other volunteer activities. In addition, we'll be re-introducing the Rotary social soon! Be looking for emails from Heidi announcing these events.

Cary Gray announced that, due to the construction on the old Havre highway, we'll need to find a new stretch of road to clean up. If anyone has suggestions, contact Cary.

Chelle Freid urged Rotarians to compete in the Chamber's Military Affairs Committee's 46th Annual Golferoo on Friday, May 21.

Gaines Shines Again!

With Superintendent Tom Moore on hand as our guest speaker, last week's Rotary meeting seemed the perfect time for the Great Falls Public Schools to bestow its Golden Apply Award on our honorary Rotarian, Gaines McFadden and his project partner, Dan Oakland.

Gaines and Dan, supported by school board trustee Gordon Johnson, initiated the "Desk of Their Own" project. Approximately $6,000 was donated for the supplies that allowed Gaines and Dan to construct desks sized for students to use at home during the pandemic year. Students were allowed to choose the color of paint they wanted for their desks.

As we all know, having workspace of your own is an incentive to do the work. Thanks to Gaines, Dan, Gordon, and generous donors, 130 students in the Great Falls Public Schools got that incentive.

Weekly Wonder

Oh Lord, my God,
When I, in awesome wonder,
Behold my world, resplendently renewed ...
The light-filled arc of rainbow after thunder,
What once was dark with glory now imbued.
Then sings my soul, my savior unto Thee
How great Thy art, how great Thy art.
It makes me whole - and, oh, so close to Thee.
How great Thy art! How great Thy art!
