Last week our featured speaker was Sophia Sparklin, local architect, recent mother, and fellow Rotarian. In a polished and fascinating presentation, Sophia discussed the "split personality" that results from being born and raised in Germany, but now working and living in the United States. She contrasted her reactions as "the German me" vs. "the American me" in situations at work, at home, and in the community.
One of the interesting anecdotes Sophia provided was how the German emphasis on recycling has shaped their behavior. Germans are encouraged to recycle everything, even cereal boxes, but their recycling fees rise with the weight of their recycled materials. As a result, when Germans buy cereal at their equivalent of a supermarket, they pull out the plastic inner bag and leave the box at the store!
Golf Tournament Results
Seven brave souls took a chance on the weather and played in the annual golf tournament last week. Teams played a two-man “Scotch ball” format, and the weather ended up being beautiful. Here are the unofficial and highly contested results:
First Place: Art Taft, Bob Holter, Mike Wier
Second Place: Randy Williams, Ryan Miller
Third Place: John Koppelman, Scott Patera
This Week in Rotary
At last: the meeting we've been waiting for! This week Sydney Blair will introduce the most recent batch of RYLA students and we'll hear what they learned at the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy last summer. It's always a treat to meet these kids and see how their experience at RYLA has honed their vision of the world and of themselves.
Also this week we'll have a short presentation from Fred Pfieffer, who will be making a special donation to Camp Rotary.
Conviviality, commiseration, and the occasional dash of cornball humor ... join us at noon at the country club!
To-Do List
The fall highway clean-up is scheduled for this Thursday, Sept. 24. Plan to meet at 5:15 in the KRTV parking lot, and if you have a 4-wheeler, bring it. (It really speeds up the process!) Please notify either John Koppelman or Fred Anderson if you can help.
Of the 58 schools participating in our dictionary project, 7 schools still need a volunteer. All the remaining schools are rural. If someone wants to help with a Great Falls school, we have 9 schools with 50 or more third-graders, and it 's nice to have two people do the larger schools. If you’re interested in either of these options, please call Denise Gray at 453-1163.
The next meeting dictionaries will be available for pick-up will be September 29. If you’ve already delivered dictionaries, please bring the number of books delivered to our September 29 meeting and return any extra dictionaries and labels.
Milestones
Mea culpa! In an effort to omit her own birthday from last week's milestones, your bulletin editor also failed to mention two stalwart Rotarians who put another candle on the cake last week: Kevin Clark (Sept. 16) and Beth McFadden (Sept. 19). Coming up this week are birthdays for Bill Bronson and Bill Harp (Sept. 22) and Tom Nelson (Sept. 27). Best wishes to you all!
