This Week at Rotary

This week we'll hear from Dr. Cait Walter and her cheerleaders. Tim Peterson was the most recent Rotarian to bite the dust on the elusive 6 of spades last week, so the 50-50 pot next week will be at least $298! Join us at noon at the country club!

Last Week at Rotary

Last week's presentation featured three Rotarians who have another shared interest - Neighborworks Great Falls. Executive Director Sherrie Arey, retired Executive Director Sheila Rice, and NGF Foundation board member Cari Yturri reminded us of all the good that Neighborworks has done in this community over the last several decades. NGF has provided countless families with the stability that homeownership creates and revitalized neighborhoods in the process.

A special emphasis of the presentation was on the endowment that the Neighborworks Great Falls Foundation is creating. The goal is to raise $2.5 million to ensure that the good work of NGF has the stability it needs.

Heidi Hockett also brought us up to speed on the Duck Race. It will take place at the Holiday Inn's waterslide sometime in mid-November. Northwest Energy is helping to underwrite the project, but it's time for Rotarians to get busy buying and selling ducks! This is will a fun fundraiser.

Mike Wier gave us an update on Harvest Howl. The committee is meeting on Thursday nights at 5:30 at the country club. There are a couple of committees that need volunteers, so step up and help us reach our goals for our signature event.

Dean Boyle visited both high schools last week with posters promoting Rotary's exchange program. This is a valuable opportunity for a high school student to study abroad with Rotary's support. If you know a high school student who might be interested, the deadline for applying is September 15! Contact Dean at 868-4711 and he'll give you the information you need.

This week's "Bulletin Bucks" go to pin #22. Contact Todd Neighbor if you are the winner.

Farewell to a Servant Heart

We received the sad news at last week's Rotary meeting that Denise Gray has submitted her resignation from the club. Family priorities pull her increasingly to Arizona, and Denise never does anything in name only. She can't continue her active Rotary involvement, so she concluded it was time to say goodbye.

It's hard to imagine how we will fill the void Denise leaves. She is one of those Rotarians who is just always there, not up front in titled leadership roles, but leading quietly and efficiently with a servant heart.

She has organized the silent auction at the Harvest Howl for years, picking up wine bottles and baskets and all manner of gifts and storing them for weeks and then setting them up beautifully on the day of the event. She has also headed up the dictionary project, hauling boxes with her wherever she goes for the better part of a month, keeping track of who went where, and saving the precious letters from the kids.

Care packages for the military? A speak-easy at the History Museum? A gala centennial celebration? Of course, she'll help. And her help is always as graceful and as tasteful as it is self-effacing.

In Montana, we never really say goodbye. The roads always lead back home, even if the roads are only the memories that warm that hearth we call our hearts. So see you later, Denise. All our love, all our gratitude ... until we meet again.

Service Opportunities Coming Right Up!

Get involved! This fall presents lots of opportunities for service above self:

1. Dictionary Project. The dictionaries have been ordered. Choose an elementary school where you'd like to give the dictionaries to a third-grade class. It's a blast! Reserve the school of your choice with Mary Moe now (868-9427 or mary.sheehy.moe@gmail.com or just reply to this bulletin). When the dictionaries arrive, we'll give you more information.

2. Harvest Howl. The planning committee is meeting on Thursdays at 5:30 at the country club. Mike Wier is in need of a few new committee members, so contact him (781-7343) if you'd like to help our signature event succeed.

3. Highway Clean-up. Carey Gray has agreed to take on this one-night-and-you're-done project of ours. You join our crew on the highway by KRTV, clean up the borrow pits, and then wash the dust off your throat with a cool beverage afterwards. The specific date hasn't been set, so stay tuned for a date in late September. Contact Carey at 590-1603 or catgraphics@3rivers.net if you'd like to help.

Milestones

Three of our members became Rotarians on this date years ago:

  • Jim Humphrey - 32 years
  • Douglas Hagen - 26 years
  • Bill Harp - 26 years
That's a lot of years of service above self. Thanks, guys!

Weekly Wisdom - The End of Summer

To say it was a beautiful day would not begin to explain it. It was that day when the end of summer intersects perfectly with the start of fall.
