We had a full house last week for the annual visit from our District Governor, Bill Spath from Butte. Bill teaches Health Sciences at Montana Tech for his day job, but as our new governor, he and his wife, Mary Lou have been touring the state making gubernatorial visits.
Bill's focus as governor is on literacy, so he's very interested in distributing books to as many people as possible to encourage reading as a leisure activity. (See "This and That," below.) Governor Spath was very complimentary about our club's activism in the dictionary project and RYLA. He encouraged us to plan early and well for our 100-year celebration because it's a great way to celebrate our history and fellowship as local Rotarians. Our celebration date is set for Friday, March 4.
After our luncheon meeting, Kurt Baltrusch took Governor Spath and his wife to see Camp Rotary. That evening Tim Peterson and others feted the couple with dinner at the country club. As you can see, Governor Spath and his wife ended the evening at the Voyagers game. A good time was had by all!
This Week in Rotary
This week our presenter will be Brandon Nelson, who will tell us about his experience teaching English as a second language in Taiwan. Join us at noon at the country club!
This and That
As part of District Governor Spath's literacy challenge to collect books to distribute in the community, we collected 105 books last week at Rotary. We are shooting for at least 230 total to win the statewide challenge. Bring your books to Rotary this month!
Mike Wier and Bob Holter are challenging the rest of us to better their scores this year at the annual Rotary Golf Tournament. The tournament is scheduled to take place after our weekly meeting on Sept. 15. Cost for non-MLCC members is $40 with cart. Contact President Peterson, Mike or Bob to sign up for this fun event.
John Koppelman is looking for a new co-chair to assist him in planning the Highway Clean-up Project. His former assistant, Luke Lingafelter, has moved. Rotarians are responsible for a stretch of the Havre highway near KRTV. A group of Rotary volunteers, which can change from clean-up to clean-up, pick up trash on that stretch on a quarterly basis. The clean-up usually takes only an hour or so, and the group enjoys liquid libations when the work is done. Contact John is you can help him organize this event. We should schedule a date for a September clean-up soon.
Dean Boyle asks that you make sure to submit attendance lists to him after Rotary Committee meetings. Attendance at these meetings can be used as "make-ups" for a luncheon meeting you might have missed, so the lists are important for our records.
Beginning September 1, the sale of tables for Harvest Howl opens up to the community. If you want to reserve a table for your group before they go public, contact Mike Wier at Rotary tomorrow!
Rotarians Roll up Their Sleeves
Camp Rotary serves a lot of kids, and that requires a lot of service. Last Sunday, several Rotarians showed up to help move beds out of the cabins so that they could be demolished. While they were there, Bill Knick repaired the riding mower and Kurt Baltrusch and Ken Munski got going on the roofs. Kurt returned on Monday to replace a switch on the heater and returned yet again on Tuesday to give the district governor a tour.
Whew! Our thanks for all their work last weekend go out to: Gaines and Beth McFadden, Jeff Aldrich, Art Taft, Bill and Sherrie Knick, Tim Peterson, David Cameron, Ken Munski, Bruce Davidson, Todd Neighbor, and Kurt Baltrusch.
Milestones
Happy birthday on August 31 to Rebecca Bogden-Richards and on September 3 to Nicole Jemming. May the new year treat you both well!
