Coming up in Rotary

This week we'll hear from former mayor Randy Gray on Initiative 181, which would provide a stable funding stream for biomedical research in Montana. We are still working on finding a speaker who will present the opposition argument. Join us at noon at the country club!

On November 7, join us at Mighty Mo's at 7 p.m. to "Raise a Pint Against Polio"!

Last Week at Rotary

When our planned speaker for last week had to cancel at the last moment, Susan Wolff agreed to give us an update on Great Falls College MSU. As usual, she did not disappoint.

Susan told us about the college's initiatives, including dual credit opportunities to high school students, an open house for home-schooling families, "Science Fridays" and robotics play for area high school students. She welcomed UGF's new president to the club and to our community and told us about the efforts Great Falls College is making to coordinate with UGF, not only on academic programming, but also on services they could share, such as bookstore and security.

Great Falls College has done a great deal to provide workforce training opportunities to meet demand in the Golden Triangle, but the college is also addressing these needs across the state. Their mobile welding lab, for instance, is deployed to meet needs elsewhere, including the women's prison in Billings.

The college's enrollment is slightly up, in spite of eliminating 10 programs last year due to lack of demand and the need to tighten the budget. However, the college has added 2 new programs with strong student interest: computer coding and industrial technology.

We are fortunate to have this dynamic leader charting the course for one of Great Falls' beloved community assets.

Welcome Our New Members

It's been an active quarter for bringing new members into our club. We've had several blue badge ceremonies and we continue to receive new member applications.

Joining us last week as red badge applicants were Cooper Thomas, Joann Gogo and Rachel Pahut. Cooper is Bob Oakland's grandson, and the resemblance is striking! He works at City Chevrolet. Joann is membership director for the Chamber of Commerce and also owns L & J's Pig Roast. Rachel Pahut is the Director of Nursing at the Great Falls Clinic Hospital.

Rachel (pictured here with President Lee) was also the lucky winner of last week's raffle for a try at the 50-50 pot. Although Rachel's ticket was drawn, her luck ended there. Although she didn't draw the winning card, she took the disappointment graciously, as you can see.

Please take the time to introduce yourself to our new members and make them feel welcome in Rotary Club of Great Falls!

A Few Instructions on the Dictionary Project

Dictionaries will be available for pick-up at this week's meeting, for those of you who didn't pick them up last week.

It has been reported that in a few cases, the dictionaries inside the boxes are damaged. Please check all your cases for damaged books. When you make your appointment to deliver, reconfirm the number of third grade students in the classroom. The enrollment changes from spring to fall, and you want to make sure that you have enough books for everyone.
