Rotary Speakers Needed!

Is there a particular speaker you'd like to hear at our weekly meetings? Is there a topic you'd like to learn more about? We're facing a dry spell for luncheon speakers and could sure use your suggestions. Contact Kurt Baltrusch if you have an idea that might be interesting.

Last Week at Rotary

Last week our featured presenter was Stan Meyer, (pictured behind Aaron at left) who used to own Wendt Advertising. In the 1960s one of Stan's biggest customers, Union Oil, contracted with Wendt to produce educational movies about Montana with literally no budget. One of these movies was “Lewis and Clark’s Footsteps in Montana," which we watched at the conclusion of Stan’s remarks.

The movie was produced in 1966, using volunteers from local Boy Scout troops. The Montana Power Company agreed to shut down the dam for a few hours so that, when released, the water simulated the effect it had on the first white viewers of the great falls of the Missouri.

Stan's wife helped make costumes and John McIntyre, a familiar voice on TV at the time, agreed to narrate. The movie was shot on 16mm film, which had to be sent off nightly for development. One scene was re-shot 14 times.

Wendt also made a film about Charlie Russell and another about Glacier Park for Union Oil. It was fun to watch this classic and be reminded of the story that gave our community its name.

Rotarians Are ... Creative Thinkers!

How do you get people to visit a mausoleum? In Great Falls, you start with a car show and end with an popular old movie!

Fellow Rotarian Steve Schnider hosted just such a community event at the Hillcrest Lawn Mausoleum last Thursday. By 6 p.m. the parking lot was filled with classic autos from years gone by and the people who love them. After much ooh-ing and ahh-ing over this vehicle or that one, folks settled into the chapel to watch another classic on the 1950's - Grease.

Proceeds from concession sales went to the Great Falls School Pantries project. What a pleasant way to end a pleasant summer evening!

Milestones

Trading a red badge for a blue one last week was Jeremy Reedy. Congratulations, Jeremy!

Celebrating another year of life on Tuesday is Sheila Rice. This month also marks Sheila's 28th anniversary as a Rotarian. Best wishes, Sheila. Our world is a brighter place with you in it!

Weekly Wisdom on Eating Right

The Cherokee elder told his grandson this story: “There is a fight to the death going on inside every one of us, a fight between two wolves. One wolf epitomizes all that is evil: greed, hatred, violence, selfishness, and depravity. The other wolf is all that is good: faith, humility, compassion, serenity, and courage.  The two wolves cannot co-exist. Only one can prevail.”

His grandson asks, “Which wolf wins?”

The Cherokee’s answer: “The one you feed.”
