This Week at Rotary

This week we'll hear from fellow Rotarian Scott Patera on the subject of clean coal electricity regulation. The 50-50 deck continues to lose weight, so your odds of winning are improving. Join us at noon at the country club!

So Near Our Goal!

We are this close from eradicating polio worldwide! Only 70 cases were reported last year, and so far this year, only 11 cases have been reported. Sooooo close!

Between now and June 30, Rotarians are asked to participate in the 30th Anniversary Challenge for PolioPlus by donating $30 to The Rotary Foundation's polio fund in honor of the 30 years of Rotary's work to eradicate polio.  Help make 2016 the LAST year for polio. Donate by check or credit card the next time you attend a meeting.

We’re also collecting change for Pennies for Polio Plus. Let’s double down on this debilitating disease and get rid of it once and for all! Learn more about how to donate and help end polio at https://www.rotary.org/myrotary/en/take-action/end-polio

Last Week at Rotary

This week we were joined by our newest new member, Mindy Kizer, director of human resources for Great Falls Public Schools. Welcome, Mindy!

We also heard 3-minute talks from two red badge wearers. Christy Hagler attended our 100 Year Gala as the field director for Congressman Ryan Zinke and took us up on our invitation to become a Rotarian. With a husband stationed at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Kristi ended her own air force career to join him in Great Falls many years ago and quickly got a job working for MANG. Recently retired, she became interested in politics and agreed to serve as Rep. Zinke's field director in late 2015.

Mark Nash was born and raised in Great Falls and served our country in the Gulf War. He now has a son in Afghanistan. After working as an outside salesperson for Credit Associates for many years, he recently bought the company and appreciates the chance to mingle with a broad spectrum of the community through Rotary.

Our presentation this week was by Trisha Harp Gardner (Bill's daughter) and Erin Merchant, who told us about the newest update to the Community Health Improvement Plan. A number of groups partner with the City/County Health Department to implement the plan. Priorities include substance abuse prevention, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, improving access to healthcare (dentistry is a particular problem), and addressing child neglect and abuse.

Camp Rotary Update

Start planning now for Camp Clean-up Day on Saturday, May 14. To carpool, be at the 4-B's on 10th Avenue South at 8 a.m.; otherwise, plan to be at the camp by 9 a.m. More details in next week's bulletin.

This Friday, thanks to the generosity of David and Tanya Cameron, we'll be moving a piano into Davidson Lodge at the camp. What a wonderful addition that will be! We're on the verge of hiring a caretaker for the camp, a much-needed position to fill.

The Camp Rotary website is up and just needs content to be fully operational. Special thanks to Rob Rezek for coordinating this effort.

Milestones

Our club was honored by the History Museum last week with its Legacy Award, recognizing the proud history of Great Falls Rotary in our community and state. Accepting the award from History Museum Director Jim Meinert (background) was President Tim Peterson. Pretty special. Thanks to all the Rotarians who were there to celebrate the occasion.

Birthday greetings go out this week to John Huber on Monday, John Juras on Tuesday, and Gary Bjelland and Tim McGonigal on Wednesday. Best wishes to all of you for a happy and healthy new year of life!
